When I say Switzerland, usually the first thing that people think of is chocolate, watches, and the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. However, Switzerland is an amazing place where it’s not just famous for all these things but for much much more. This last spring on my travels from Amsterdam to Positano, Italy, I had the chance to travel through Switzerland for a two day layover. I wanted to visit a high Alpine villages and enjoy the pure beauty of what this country has the offer. We traveled from Paris via train to Grindelwald Switzerland. A very popular Alpine Village at the base of some amazing mountains. On our first day we showed up, the weather was a little overcast but it’s quite amazing. Just seeing the pure size of these mountains that surround the village really makes you feel small and let you know how insignificant you really are on this planet. We got off the train and went to our Hotel called Hotel Belvedere Grindelwald which was only about a five minute walk away from the train station. We checked in and paid for the Mountain view room which ended up being the best thing we could’ve done for ourselves. The view from the hotel room is absolutely stunning, plus I could take photos from the balcony which is always a plus for me.
We had planned for the next day to go paragliding and go to Jungfrau to visit the “top of Europe” but as we woke up the next morning, we are greeted by an unexpected weather change. I kinda knew that we might be greeted with this crappy weather from the time lapse I was making on the first day. Here you can see a failed time lapse that I was trying to create. After a few mess ups with either me moving the lens or kicking the tripod leg, I gave up. However, I still wanted to show you guys this video.
It was drizzly overcast day and it was not shaping up to be a great day to do any of the things that we planned on. We had to make the best of our only full day here in Switzerland. So after having our complementary breakfast at our hotel, we asked our local host what there was to do on a rainy day. She informed up about a indoor waterfall called Trummelbach Falls that is only a 30 min ride by train and bus from our hotel. Just to let any one know, it’s loud and very wet inside from the mist.
After visiting the waterfall, we went down to the lower Village called Interlaken to see the Alpine Lake of Brienz that we’ve seen on our way in that had this amazing color to it. Then we visited the local supermarket for supplies for the night and the train ride to Venice the next day. We went straight to lake Brienz, walked around the area and looked at the beautiful lake. The water had this blue/green look to it which I have never seen before in person. It’s really hard to explain how it looks like but it’s something that I will never forget. We also ran across A few cows in the field which was quite surreal seeing these cows with the background of the Swiss Alps behind it.
After we got our groceries we headed back up to Grindelwald to soak our bodies in hot tubs and to relax before our travels the next day. The next morning we woke up to a beautiful sunrise which was trying to peek through the clouds from the previous day. You could tell right then and there that Switzerland was trying to show us what she was hiding from us over the last 2 days. Switzerland has so much hidden beauty that spending only a few days here would not satisfy your curiosity about this place. As were leaving on the train to go down to Venice, the weather broke and the sun starting to come out. And of course, it was just gorgeous. These images you see here are taken from the train as we were leaving. As we sat back on our train heading down to Venice, we couldn’t help but think that we’ve got cheated of the experience that we wanted to do so much.
As my wife and I sat back and think about our trip across Europe, the one place that we traveled to that keeps on coming up in conversation is our time in Grindelwald, Switzerland. We are already starting to plan a trip back to Switzerland and spend more time seeing and exploring Switzerland. Grindelwald is just one place in Switzerland but it has some of the most amazing sights I have ever seen. If you have a chance to visit the Alps region in Europe, Switzerland is one place I highly recommend you to go and see.
